BMW Indonesia does not want to let its strongest rival play alone with its newest generation. Yes, the Mercedes E-Class, which has recently been paving on the streets of Indonesia, will face strong resistance from the seventh generation BMW 5 Series which will soon be launched in Indonesia.
Jodie O'tania as Vice President for Corporate Communications at BMW Group Indonesia stated that the latest generation of BMW 5 Series will have features that pamper drivers and passengers as well as a truly fresh appearance. "This new 5-series is one of the most important models for BMW. This car combines the comfort of the 7-series and the agility of the 3-series," said Jodie at BMW Tokyo Bay, Japan, Tuesday 23/5/2017.
In appearance, it does adopt from the 7 Series but has a more sporty characteristic. It can be seen from the adaptive LED headlamps that are designed to be integrated with a double kidney grill that is equipped with an active airstream like the 7 Series. This feature is useful for cooling the engine room and also increasing aerodynamic power.
Coupled with the air curtain design or grille on the front bumper also helps to pass air into the BMW air breather. This adds to the aerodynamics of the vehicle, and the Series 5 overall has a drag coefficient of 0.22 which is the lowest figure in the premium sedan segment.
If the Luxury trim further emphasizes the elegant impression thanks to the chrome wrapping, the M Sport version looks more sporty with a black bandage with a double exhaust box design. The L-shaped taillights are designed to widen to the sides so that they represent the spaciousness of the new design. Thanks to the use of aluminum and high-strength steel, the BMW 5 Series has managed to diet and has experienced a weight loss of up to 100 kg compared to the previous generation.
Inside the cabin, you will be spoiled by the entertainment system from the latest generation of iDrive combined with a touch screen measuring 10.25 inches. Apart from being operated via a touch screen and also the iDrive Controller, a hand motion feature is also available which was adopted from the Series 7. There is also a 360 parking camera and Harman Kardon audio system as standard.
BMW also applies the latest generation of Head-Up Display which can display a beam with a size of 70% larger than displays road markings, phonebooks, radio, music, navigation, and alerts. The instrument panel is also fully digital. Not only that, but the rear passengers also get more legroom with a chair that has a massage feature.
While behind the hood, the All-new BMW 530i will carry a 2.0L four-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology that can produce 252 hp and 350 Nm of torque. And the BMW 520d will use a 2,000 cc diesel engine with a maximum power of 190 hp and a giant torque of 400 Nm.
The diesel variant is only available in the Luxury Line trim. All variants of the BMW 5 Series will still be combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission to transmit power from the engine to the rear wheels.
Besides that, another advantage of the new 5 Series is the presence of a semi-autonomous feature through the expansion of the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Active Cruising Steering (ACS) features. This ACC feature is another name for adaptive cruise control which can adjust its speed according to radar, including braking from a static position up to 210 kph. Meanwhile, Active Cruising Steering can keep the car on the right track according to the road markings, so BMW calls it semi-autonomous.
