Autocar Indonesia Magazine received a special invitation from Land Rover Indonesia to try out New Discovery in the United States. The 18-hour journey via Japan to the United States is a cross-country and continental journey.

Travel fatigue finally paid off after on the first day (25/02), Autocar was given the opportunity to taste the Land Rover New Discovery. Which has now entered its fifth generation. Since its first appearance in 1989, Generation Discovery has always provided new things in driving.

For 27 years, Discovery has had its specialty for its fans. More than 1.2 million consumers are very satisfied with Discovery. Well, this fifth-generation represents the resilience of Discovery which is always prioritized. Light, strong, and safe are the main reference for this New Discovery. Born in the digital era, New Discovery presents the latest technological breakthroughs that highlight the toughness, comfort, and strength side of today's SUV.

The new appearance of the fifth generation of Discovery now has a display that is no longer boxy. The old characteristic is maintained with a stepped roof and a different C-pillar design model, while the grille now looks more modern. The design looks more dazzling and sophisticated, the new narrow headlamps represent the art of high design. Supported by the use of DRL lights that make it look more modern.

While the rear has also changed, using LED technology in the taillights. A design that depicts a modern impression with a sports orientation, making this New Discovery even more enchanting. Many are concerned about the design changes at New Discovery, such as leaving an identical identity that has been imprinted for four generations. "Land Rover provides a design and engineering revolution for New Discovery, solely to give this SUV a more robust and reliable premium capability," said Gerry McGovern, Chief Design Officer of Land Rover.

To accommodate passengers, New Discovery can accommodate up to 7 passengers. And to carry more items, all the seats in the second and third rows can be folded. For seat folding alone, there are up to 21 configurations.

There is a cup holder in the front, rear door trim, and front to provide drink storage space for the occupants. There is also a hidden drawer behind the AC switch. The center console has a kind of cooler, to keep drinks or food stored in cold conditions.

The passenger and driver seats are designed quite well, the surface of the seat with a curve that fits in the body of the driver or rider.

The monocoque chassis uses as much as 85% aluminum, so the weight of the New Discovery is 480 kg lighter than the previous generation. And 50% of the aluminum material, can be recycled. The front of the bonnet uses magnesium, which is very sturdy, while the back uses steel.

With the new design, it has a value of co = 0.33, which is good enough. New Discovery now has a lighter weight, an engine with good fuel efficiency, and a vehicle design that optimizes aerodynamics.

New Discovery still carries the spirit of adventure with toughness. By carrying a powerful 2.0L Ingenium Sd4 Turbo Diesel engine, it is capable of producing a maximum power of 240 hp and a torque of 500 Nm. While the transmission relies on an 8-speed automatic ZF. You can feel the abundance of energy when wading through the muddy terrain.

The vehicle keeps moving thanks to its four-wheel-drive system, the great power that must be maintained so as not to make the muddy road too heavy. The big wheel rotation makes the muddy soil to eat deep. Therefore, driving is full of calculations following the directions of the instructor on the terrain.

The gearshift is quite smooth, there is no jerk. But it is quite responsive, especially when entering the 2,000 rpm engine speed, the engine boost feels quite strong. The diesel engine is famous for its large torque, which is the reason for New Discovery to carry the engine.

Autocar starts the journey from the small town of St George, to the Amangiri inn by traveling about 200 km. By going through the on-road to off-road. This is for the sake of showing the capabilities of the New Discovery.

The journey from the city of St George to Zion National Park is a snowy mountainous area. The winding streets, New Discovery have a fairly light steering wheel. So that the turning maneuver is quite comfortable. Large engine power, providing convenience when climbing.

Zion National Park presents a variety of terrain, the area has mountains, rocks, rivers with various natural beauty. Traveling in the Zion National Park area through paved roads, the torque of New Discovery was tested when bulldozing the road uphill.

The journey continues in the Zion National Park area, this time starting to dominate the downhill road. New Discovery is equipped with brakes with ABS and EBD systems, which makes braking better and provides a sense of security. Stop at the Buffalo Grill to enjoy the specialties of the local farm area, eat grilled chicken with its special spices.

The New Discovery's lightweight steering allows the driver to make light turning maneuvers, while the suspension is also quite comfortable. Entering the Pariah Breaks area, the road conditions are dominated by smooth asphalt. Every now and then this premium SUV is driven at up to 100 mph, tempted by roads that are quite smooth and good. Unfortunately, local regulations must be respected, the 75 mph speed limit is the top speed.

Pariah area, famous for its ghost city. Because there are several uninhabited buildings with a background of reddish cliffs. The ghost town intrigued me. The whole trip feels tedious because it is dominated by a long straight path (which reaches 40 km) plus downward curves. New Discovery continues to show its class as a premium SUV, by providing comfort when going through these roads. The suspension damping is quite good, it looks like swinging in the cabin of the vehicle. It shows how soft the suspension is, even though we set the suspension height to be quite low or hard.

Likewise, the sound attenuation in the cabin is quite good. The sound of the diesel engine does not really induce into the cabin space. The suspension damping is soft because, through the paved road, Autocar sets the suspension a bit low. To increase grip to the asphalt surface better, wide tires, namely 265/65 R20, are used.

Towards the destination or lodging Amangiri, New Discovery is directed towards a rural road. The condition of the road is not paved, only paved with dirt and small gravel. The vehicle settings were changed, with the suspension height being set higher first. Then turn the knob to the settings to explore off-road terrain.

This is what makes New Discovery smart, because by pressing a button and selecting the settings for the terrain to be traversed. So the vehicle gets ready for action, in stark contrast to the vehicles of the 1990s to 2000s. Sufficient mastery of the terrain and vehicles is required, so not everyone can enjoy the challenges of off-road terrain.

With this New Discovery, I, who is still fairly unfamiliar with off-road terrain, was able to go through that terrain. Go for real off-road trails, bulldoze dry and muddy dirt roads with different contours. New Discovery shows its class as a premium SUV that is tough and capable of gobbling up all terrain.

The four-wheel-drive is very helpful when bulldozing soil mixed with snow, even though the tires used are not specifically for off-road terrain. Discovery's distinctive toughness seems to be depicted in this newest generation. Handling is quite good and easy when crossing off-road terrain, the big power of the engine is very influential when crossing steep uphill and downhill roads.

Starting to enter the area near the Amangiri inn, the path begins to change by crawling through a large, steep rock. Automatically, the vehicle will bring out its greatest ability to conquer the route, placed several experienced instructors from Land Rover who will provide directions when Autocar goes through this quite difficult route.

After conquering the off-road terrain with steep rocks, Autocar finally continued the journey on the paved road to the Amangiri inn. Which is the final destination of the trip with the diesel-engined New Discovery.
